Splinter Carvers Latest Project: Soaring Eagle

Postby pjalbert » Mon Jan 08, 2018 12:40 pm

The Splinter Carvers have just recently completed the latest large-scale club carving project, the soaring eagle. This project seemed to take longer than previous club projects, the cigar store Indian and totem poles, because of the desire for a realistic and life size eagle and fish. Many, many photographs of eagles and trout were used to replicate every detail. The eagle is carved from a single basswood log. The rough out was done with a chain saw but the majority of the carving was completed with mallet and gouge. The eagle will be presented to the Wood Club at Show and Tell at the January meeting at UTSI and then placed on display at the Artisan's Depot in Cowan. Like the previous Splinter Carver carving projects, the soaring eagle is being offered for sale. Interested buyers should visit the Artisan's Depot or contact a member of the Splinter Carvers through the Tennessee Valley Wood Club web site.

Pau, that's a great job and disproves the saying about things developed by committee. Looking forward to seeing it live and close up.
