Box for Ashes

Larry Bowers asked me to make a box for Larry Dameworth's widow to house her husband's ashes. Herewith:

I'm not sure of the protocol for this sort of thing but I made it to the specifications Larry provided. The wood is 5/8" thick red oak. Dimensions 10 1/4" x 8 1/4" x 6 1/2" . Outside dimensions determined by inside requirements given by funeral home.

An additional note: If you look at the corners you'll find an idea taught me by Henry Davis many years ago. Ring porous woods [especially red oak] are bad to leave jagged edges on a miter cut. Henry's solution was to embed a 1/4" square edge into a simple cut into the ends of the miter after the box is glued up. Covers a multitude of sins too. Except Henry's corners were pristine; mine, not so much.

That looks really nice and I do like Henry's solution for the corners. I just can't get into making urns.

Looks like there's a good opportunity here for CNC personalization, unless they want it plain, of course.

Loyd left the box at my house for Larry to pick up. Larry and Mrs. Dameworth came by the afternoon and picked it up. She was very pleased and appreciative.
