Powermatic 3520b

Postby sid_matheny » Mon May 22, 2017 8:59 pm

I have been hearing (reading) rumors that the Powermatic 3520b is being discontinued. Anyone know anything about it! They say a new lathe will be taking it's place.

They better be careful with that move. There's a whole industry based on additions -- extensions, lights, tool rests, etc. -- to that lathe; also, maintaining another inventory of repair parts isn't a cheap proposition.

Well I see on Facebook the new replacement for the 3520b is the new 3520c.
Here is a picture but they don't show it on their web site yet.

Cast Iron or structured steel? I wonder.

I'm guessing it's cost reductions in the disguise of improvements. Well known strategy in businesses.

In the series of small pictures behind the lathe what do you think that's showing.. Almost looks like a hinged tail stock ?

Looks like a tool rest attachment. Look to the left of the frame near the headstock. Is that something to hang a tool rest assembly on? It has a bed extension on the unit in this model. No surprise there. Maybe they're going after the same market as the Stubby lathe for turning outboard.

Here is what they had to say on Facebook.

There she is folks! The new 3520C
• Moveable control box
• Ergonomic spindle design
• Adjustable riser blocks
• Anti-rotation tailstock key
• Digital indexing readout
• Increased weight
• Increased working capacity between centers

When does yours arrive Sid? I'm anxious to see it but don't wish to buy one. ;)
