The 2016 TVW turning bee was a success today. There are several new turners in the club now. That event is a favorite and we all have a good time out there. Thanks to Larry Wendland for hosting again this year. He has the ideal place for that event with that great big shade tree under which to eat lunch and take a break from time to time. Karen Browning came out there with a lot of goodies to start the event and made some desserts at lunch. Doyle did his usual fine job of demonstrating how to turn a bowl with his usual emphasis on riding the bevel. Several lathes with an attendant instructor [they called us mentors so we would feel important]. Tom Cowan and I tried to piece together the history of the turning bee and concluded [maybe we decided] that it all began when 5 of us were returning from a TAW seminar in Gatlinburg 15 years ago. Someone mentioned we should have an event to teach members how to get started turning and we decided it would be like the old fashioned sewing bee that the ladies used to have. The name "Turning Bee" stuck; hence we just finished the 2016 turning bee.

In checking in the club's old picture albums it appears that the first Turning Bee was at Tom's shop on July 6 2002. The estimate of 15 years ago was darn close. We enjoyed an instant gallery, sawing bowl blanks demo and lot's of hands on turning, No pictures of food ?

Yes, the turning bee has been a success for a long time. I turned for the first time at one of the events. I still have the bowl I roughed out at the first bee I attended. This year was no different, everything was great.
