Opps Again

Postby loyd » Thu Jul 12, 2018 5:46 pm

I used the CNC this morning to make another shelf unit with a 3d carving. That worked ok until I got to the part where I set up to cut out the shelf part using my only down cut 1/4" end mill. When setup is almost done the last step is to remove the touch plate.

Opps and you think "How did I do that". I saw that happen with a 3" end mill and was not pretty!

Well there's this: I seldom even think of goggles or a face mask when using the CNC, and I still haven't located the other part(s) of that bit. The ear muffs and dust mask are immediately put on before the noise and dust comes with the push of the GO button, but I never even thought of a broken bit.

Back when I worked at AVCO in Nashville this is the type of CNC I ran and when you had an opps with these you really had a BIG opps! 3 spindles and 5 axis cutting 3 parts worth around $10,000 each.

I just realized: "a 3 inch end mil". Mine was 0.250 inches.
