The December meeting will be at 7:00 pm on the 18th at the University of Tennessee Space institute, room H111.
Our December program is the annual “Giant
Show & Tell”. This is your chance to bring those “special” items
that you are so proud of and those “not so special” learning experiences
that may not have turned out exactly as you planned. This is the time
for you to share your woodworking “adventures” with the rest of the
club. If you’re new to the Club or a visitor, here is how it works.
Instead of a regular show and tell, in which several members bring an
item, we encourage EVERYONE to bring something to show. If you don’t
have a current favorite project to share, bring an item from the past;
maybe the first thing you ever built or something you built years ago
but that you really enjoyed doing. Or you could bring an interesting
tool or something someone gave you. You get the idea! If, on the other
hand, you’d just rather not bring something, that’s OK, too. You can
just come, enjoy the meeting, and join in the applause for those who did
bring something to talk about.

Be sure to meet all of our new members and welcome them to the club.
The annual Christmas Party was held at the Church of the Nazarene in
Decherd on Friday December 7th. If you did not attend, you missed a
really great party.
Thanks to Karen Browning, chairperson, and her team for doing a
wonderful job coordinating the dinner and decorating for the event. The
food was great, the decorations were beautiful, all the gifts were
wonderful and the fellowship was really special.
The singing of Christmas songs, led by Richard Gulley and Janie Lovett,
was really great. They were accompanied by Rheta Reese.
A good time was had by all attendees.
The “Grand Door Prize”, a $250 gift certificate from Woodcraft, was won
by Bill Ward. Congratulations to Bill.
The officers for the coming year were elected at the monthly meeting in
November. The 2013 officers will assume their duties at the January
meeting.

The carvers group met at the shop of Phil Bishop on Saturday December 1st. The group worked on individual projects.
The carvers normally meet on the first Saturday of each month and work on individual or group projects. Everyone is welcome to “join in”.
The flute circle meeting is cancelled for December, due to the holiday season. They will begin in January. The date and time for the January meeting will be published as soon as it is confirmed.
The forum is having grave technical difficulties at this time. There will be additional information given out at the December regular meeting.
Why don't you make a New Year's resolution to try our digital library. You would be amazed at all the wealth of knowledge that can be found here. If you do not try it, you are missing a great opportunity to learn new techniques and brush up on old ones. Henry has the library “open” at each regular meeting. The TVW club dues are payable, beginning in November, for 2013. If
you have not already paid you dues, please pay the treasurer,
Bob Addington at the meeting or you can mail your check to Bob at his
home address (249 Big Oak Drive, Manchester, TN 37355). Our
dues are $10.00 for a single membership, and $15.00 for a family
membership (what a bargain).

Paul Jalbert - Showed the carving that was done at the Tim Ford State Park Heritage Day celebrations by all the children. The completed piece was donated to the park and is on display there. |

Bob Reese - displayed his 36th violin that he had just finished. The wood used was Quilted Maple. His wife, Rheta, then played it for the members and made it sound beautiful. |

John Hartin - had created several bowls. One was from Box Elder that had been bleached and another one made from spaulted beech. |

Vince Zaccardi - had created a segmented turned pepper mill and had carved a couple of spoons from Cherry wood. |

Doug Dunlap - displayed 3 segmented bowls that he had created since attending the “segmented bowl workshop”. |

--- Sacrificial faceplate saves time for
production turning ---
Here is a neat trick for faceplate turning. If you are a user of
double-sided tape for holding parts during a turning process, you
know how difficult it is to separate the completed part from the
tape. You might want to consider this technique. It makes for an
easy way to remove turnings when you are using double-sided tape.
For the solution, make a sacrificial faceplate as usual, but cut a
1/2" dado 9/16" deep through the center before bandsawing it round
and screwing it to the lathe's faceplate with the dado facing out.
Next, make a small hardwood wedge that fits into the slot. Then, use
double-sided tape to mount the workpiece to the sacrificial
faceplate, and turn the project.
When you are ready to remove the part, insert a thin piece of veneer
(to protect the workpiece) and the wedge into the dado gap and
gently tap in the wedge until the workpiece pops off.
