Here we are in August, the “Dog Days” of summer. Thus far Mother Nature has been kind to us with a some much needed rain and cooler weather. Maybe we’ve paid our dues in advance by having our “Dog Days” in July... .but then again one never knows about the whims of Mother Nature. I would imagine that our trees will record this summer with a pretty narrow growth ring. Now for a few Tidbits —It sure gets late early out there. .Yogi Berra—A new tie often attracts the soup of the day—Did you ever notice that those who often know the least know it the loudest?—When an egotist meets an egotist, it’s an I for an I — Baldness..the folically challenged!!

INSPIRATION AND CHIP CARVING
Lucinda Howard presented our July meeting program on Chip Carving. An excellent program addressing some of the basic cuts, ‘tools, techniques and designs. Lucinda also offered some wisdom about finding a technique that works for you, sometimes in spite of what the book or video says. Most importantly Lucinda offered up some insite into a more important aspect of our chosen hobby. ..the true joy is in the process of creating ...not the product. Part of it is no different than any endeavor in life, whether it be woodworking or brain surgery.. .like the NIKE commercial says.. .Just Do it!!!
AUGUST MEETING – TUESDAY, AUGUST 17
Ross Roepke has out done himself this month with a, full program this month. First Bill Knight will present highlights from the coopering class he took this spring. Then Henry Davis will tell us about outboard tuning a face for a large gallery clock that he and Doug Thomas have been restoring. Mr. Thomas will also bring some samples of the interesting clocks he’s restored. This should be a “knock your socks event”. Be There!! We’ll have a quiz next. month.

The Dechcrd Arts and Crafts Show will be Saturday and Sunday, September 18th and 19th. Be prepared to turn your name in if you wish to participate. We have a block of spots, four of them together, and there is always room for anyone who wishes to participate.
The next item to mark is the Fall Seminar, Saturday, October 30th. And will be held at the home of Hemy and Judy Davis. Wood turning will be the topic for this all day event. More details at upcoming meetings.
SHOW AND TELL ALL
Ross Roepke had a wonderful design for a stool/chair. Tom (3illard had a display/coffee table that was built as a moveable item to carry to shows and use at home. Rocks and gems could be seen thru the glass top. Jim Van Cleave showed a nice way to enhance his planer set up.
Crocia has been shopping again and had a set of Russian stacking dolls with eleven dolls inside one another. Torn Cowan showed some of Bob Reeses’ Pieces. Eugene Lane had some no money banks made from old post office boxes. And Phil Bishop showed his finished mantle that he had started the previous Saturday down at Falls Mill.

This salad was so popular at the picnic that we have decided to print it here. But first we had to find the culprit, I mean cook. This recipe comes compliments of one of our newest members Louise Green.
Broccoli Raisin Salad 2 bunches broccoli, chopped green onions, chopped
crumbled strips of bacon and 1/2 cups raisins
1 cup raw unsalted sunflower seeds
Mix together and add dressing
3/4 cup mayonaise
3/4 cup sugar
2 or 3 tablespoons vinegar
New Solution for Oil Spills~
Sea Sweep Inc., Denver, is marketing a unique solution to oil-spill problems on land and at sea. The company’s product. Called Sea Sweep, is a wood-based absorbent for oil and chemica] spills that floats on water indefinitely. That means it can be easily retrieved with screens or skimmers at sea. Beached Sea Sweep can be picked up by vacuum then the product can then be burned for energy in’power plants and industrial furnaces. Unlike many products used to clean up oil spills, Sea Sweep is nontoxic and biodegradable, the company says.
Quick Lip: Use your computer to lay out multiple hole patterns. sing a + character for the center of the hole, set the hole locations by varying the characters per inch and lines per inch to get the spacing desired, then print. Spray the back of the paper with 3-M Spray-Mount adhesive and stick it to the workpiece for drilling.
