MARCH Is MARCHING ON WITH AN EARLY THIRD TUESDAY THIS MONTH... YES

THAT’S RIGHT NEXT TUESDAY, MARCH 17, IS OUR MEETING NIGHT. MAYBE

SAINT PATRICK ‘S DA Y WILL HELP US REMEMBER MEETING NIGHT OR VICE

VERSA .. .IN ANY CASE DON’T FORGET. I’M AFRAID THAT MOTHER NATURE

HAS GOT THINGS ABOUT BACKWARDS THIS YEAR. INSTEAD OF APRIL

SHOWERS BRINGING MAY FLOWERS.. . . IT MIGHT BE MARCH SUN AND SPRING

IS DONE.  PERHAPS THERE IS A “LEAP YEAR CONNECTION.   HERE’S SOME

FOOD FOR THOUGHT.. .DID YOU REALIZE THAT IF “LEAP YEAR” HAD NOT

BEEN INSTITUTED 410 YEARS AGO... THE 29TH THIS YEAR WOULD HAVE

ACTUALLY BEEN JUNE 4TH.... THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A WHILE.

 

MARCH MEETING

 

THIS MONTH’S MEETING WILL PROVE TO BE AN EXTRA SPECIAL ADVENTURE.

MIKE SHARP OF U.T.S.I. WILL BE EXPOSING US TO

LASERS.. .FIGURATIVELY ONLY .. .NO NEED TO PANIC. MIKE HAS BEEN

PROFESSIONALLY INVOLVED WITH LASERS FOR MOST OF HIS CAREER AND

ALSO HAS AN INTEREST IN WOODWORKING. AT MIKE’S URGING U.T.S.I.

HAS GRANTED US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE FIRST HAND DEMONSTRATIONS

OF LASER “WOODBURNING” TECHNIQUES. THE ATTACHED MAP SHOULD GET

MOST OF US WITHIN SCENT OF THE BURNING WOOD... BUT IF YOU NEED

THE SOUTH AT SEWANEE HOLDS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST

COLLECTION OF WOOD SAMPLES. IN ALL THERE ARE MORE THAN 8,000

SAMPLES IN THE WOOD MUSEUM IN THE WOOD MUSEUM AT THE SNOWDEN

FORESTRY BUILDING. THE MUSEUM ALSO HAS A COLLECTION OF SOME 250

CARVED ITEMS SUCH AS BOWLS, PLATES, AND GOBLETS FROM DIFFERENT

KINDS OF WOODS AND AN ASSEMBLY OF 350 GAVELS ALSO FROM DIFFERENT

SPECIES. THE WOOD MUSEUM IS OPEN FROM 8 A.M. TO 5 P.M. DURING

DA YS SCHOOL IS IN SESSION.

HOW ABOUT THAT!!! IF THERE IS ENOUGH INTEREST, WE COULD CONSIDER

SETTING UP A SATURDAY FIELD TRIP. ..LET ANY OF US TOMS

Sotheby’s presents antique furniture seminar

 

Ever wonder how the pros clean and restore antique furniture? You’ll get some tips at the Antique Furniture Seminar conducted by Sotheby’s Restoration March 20-21 at Belle Meade Plantation.  Here’s the schedule:   Friday, March 20, 7:30 p.m. Alastair John Stair, director of Sothe­by’s Restoration, will speak on “The Care and Restoration of Fine Furniture”.  A wine and cheese reception lectures: Cost $15.

 

Saturday, March 21.9 a.m. Stair will speak on “English Furniture from Charles II to Regency”; 11 am.

 

Nancy Smith vice president of Sotheby’s will Speak on “American ­Furniture in the 18th and 19th Centuries”.

 

A hands-an furniture work­ shop in the afternoon will be limited to 20 participants. It is open to those, who have registered for the lectures.

 

Pre-registration is required for all sessions. For information and a registration form, call 356-0501.  Registration deadline is March 18.

OR TWO CAN ONLY MAKE IT BETTER. WE ‘RE STILL WORKING ON POWERMA TIC

FOR THE MAY PROGRAM.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR. ..THE ATLANTA WOODWORKING SHOW IS A LITTLE

EARLY THIS YEAR. MARCH 20-21-22. 1 SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE ONE OF

THE FOLLOWING :    PLENTY OF MONEY, PLENTY OF WILL POWER, OR YOUR

WIFE.

 

A FINE FEBRUARY GATHERING

 

IT ALWAYS SEEMS LIKE OUR IN-HOUSE PROGRAMS PUT ON BY OUR MEMBERS

ARE THE BEST ATTENDED’. AND THIS WAS CERTAINLY TRUE LAST MONTH.

PLENTY OF FOLKS SHOWED UP TO HEAR Roy FARMER TALK ABOUT

ELECTRICAL MOTORS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN YOUR SHOP. AND JUST

TO SHOW HOW UP TO DATE WE ARE, THIS MONTH ‘S FINE WOODWORKING HAS

AN ARTICLE ALONG THE SAME LINES, WIRING A SHOP. WE ALL LEARNED

THAT WHEN ROY SAYS “ I CAN DO THAT “ IT IS EXACTLY WHAT HE MEANS.

ROY GOT TOM COWAN TO THINK HE COULD PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM
