SPLINTERS

FELLOW SPLINTERS

REMEMBER NOVEMBER -- A TIME FOR THE RITUALS OF FALL -- CLEANING THE CHIMNEY, STACKING FIREWOOD, CLEANING GUTTERS -- THAT’S ENOUGH --  LET’S JUST LEAVE THOSE LEAVES.   NOVEMBER IS ALSO A FINE TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT ALL THOSE CHRISTMAS PROJECTS THAT SEEMED SO FAR AWAY LAST JULY.  GET THE HINT?  IT’S BEYOND TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT OUR FOURTH ANNUAL TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM. IF YOU HAVE ANY PLANS OR INSPIRATIONAL EXAMPLES, BRING THEM TO OUR NEXT MEETING.

SUSAN AND JUDY DAVIS REPORT THAT THE FOLKS AT THE FIRE STATIONS A RE JUST AS HAPPY TO SEE THOSE STORE BOUGHT TOYS IN CASE YOU CAN’T FIND THE TIME OR THE PATIENCE THIS YEAR.

WE WILL BE LOOKING FOR YOU NEXT TUESDAY NOVEMBER 21, SAME TIME, SAME PLACE. 7:00 AT THE DUCK RIVER ELECTRIC BUILDING IN DECHERD.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE -- BE A TRUE SPLINTER ALL WINTER -- BE TRUE OR TURN TO GLUE !

DON’T FORGET SHOW AND TELL AND SINCE LAST MONTH WE BROUGHT ALL OF OUR FINEST AND FINISHED EFFORTS, LET’S TRY BRINGING SOME OF OUR FINEST FAILURES THIS MONTH. OR IF YOU HAVE A NEW JIG THAT MIGHT HELP SOME OF US THROUGH THE LONG WINTER MONTHS. COME ON DOWN.

OCTOBER’S FINEST HARVEST

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MISSED LAST MONTH, AND VERY FEW OF YOU DID, YOU MISSED ONE OF THE FINEST DISPLAYS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP SEEN IN THIS AREA IN DECADES. JACK REPORTS THAT THE ARTICLE SHOULD BE OUT BY THE NEXT  MEETING. THESE PRESS DEADLINES ARE PRETTY TOUGH.  IF WE LEAVE ANYONE OUT THAT SHOWED ITEMS LAST MONTH, IT’S BECAUSE I WAS DAZZLED BY THE BRILLIANCE. THE WHITES SHOWED THEIR LOVELY PICTURE FRAMES. JACK HAD A MERRY-GO- ROUND, TOM COWAN DISPLAYED HIS CHERRY TEA TABLE, AND PHIL BISHOP SHOWED A LAMINATED BOWL AND A TRAIN THAT LOTS OF KIDS WOULD DROOL OVER. WINFIELD BENNET HAD A CHAIN HE STARTED TO CARVE IN 1937 AND HE FINISHED IT IN 1981, THAT’S A LONG CHAIN. HE IS ALSO STILL TRYING TO MAKE US BELIEVE THOSE PIGS EARS MOVE BECAUSE THERE ARE FLIES IN THEM.

BILL KNIGHT HAS BANDSAW BOXES AND A MAHOGANY PLATE. TOM GILLARD SHOWED SOME SHADOW BOXES AND MUSIC BOXES THAT MAY OR MAY OPEN DEPENDING ON IF YOU KNOW THE MAGIC WORD! BOB REESE HAD A CIVIL WAR CANTEEN AND SPICE CABINETS THAT HAD THE DISTINCTIVE AIR OF CHRISTMAS PRESENTS ABOUT THEM.

BILL M0YE HAD ONE OF HIS PELICANS AND A LOVELY LADIES LAP DESK.  SOMEWHERE IN HERE MY NOTES START TO DEGENERATE BECAUSE THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT RICHARD’S AMAZING DOGWOOD WALKING STICK, PERHAPS IT COULD WALK BY ITSELF. HENRY BROUGHT A CHERRY QUILT RACK AND ONE OF THOSE ROCKING HORSES THAT MAKE GREAT GIFTS. MURREL CHATIN SHOWED ONE OF THIS OSAGE ORANGE LAMPS. BILL CHEW HAD SOME BOWLS FROM OSAGE ORANGE THAT WERE MIGHTY FINE LOOKING AND SOMEONE

BROUGHT A VIRGINIA PILOT BOAT, BUT THEIR NAME DIDN’T GET WRITTEN DOWN.

WE WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO BROUGHT GOODIES FOR THE STOMACHS, AS WELL AS THE OPTIC NERVES. OUR SPECIAL THANKS TO JUDY DAVIS WHO HAD EVERYTHING LOOKING SO FESTIVE FOR THE FALL DISPLAY.

OSAGE ORANGE (MACLURA PQMIFERA)

THE OSAGE ORANGE IS A MEMBER OF THE MULBERRY FAMILY. I FOUND THIS  INTERESTING SINCE BILL CHEW SAYS THERE ARE A GREAT DEAL OF THEM IN MULBERRY. THE OSAGE ORANGE IS ALSO CALLED BOW – WOOD BECAUSE IT WAS USED BY THE OSAGE INDIANS TO MAKE BOWS, IS A HARDY TREE NATIVE TO THE SOUTH CENTRAL UNITED STATES. IT IS CULTIVATED IN OTHER PLACES, ESPECIALLY AS A HEDGE PLANT BECAUSE OF IT’S SPINY, IMPENETRABLE BRANCHES. IT IS A SOURCE OF FLEXIBLE WOOD AND A YELLOW - ORANGE DYE IS MADE FROM THE ROOT BARK. THANK’S TO BILL AND MURREL CHATTIN FOR STIRRING OUR CURIOSITY IN A NATIVE TENNESSEE VALLEY WOOD. I’M CERTAIN THEY SPEND SOME EXTRA TIME KEEPING THOSE TURNING TOOLS SHARP.

ORIGINAL HAS SOME SORT OF QUIZ (SEE HENRY DAVIS FOR ORIGINAL)
