TENNESSEE VALLEY WOODWORKERS         JUNE 1988

Here it is June already... I trust that none of you missed the big anniversary! that is, the infamous ..3rd of June, when Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchi Bridge. Another big event in the history of America. Of course, June 4 & 5th were important dates also

WOODTURNING SEMINAR  IN SM I THV I LLE

Tom Cowan attended both days and is happy to report that the entire seminar was excellent. Tom found the session on design to be particularly useful. An art teacher from Norfork Virginia did this part of the seminar. It included a two hour slide show with discussions of the good points or bad points of a design. I personally am learning to appreciate the importance of design—— maybe we could have design as a theme for Show and Tell or a program. Any thoughts on this fellow woodworkers?

The seminar covered all aspects of turning including:

*          TOOL MAKING

*          PRODUCTION SPINDLE TURNING

*          GREEN BOWL TURNING

*          DESIGN AND YOU NAME IT

Tom mentioned the seminar was very professional and would highly recommend it. Only 14 people attended with room for 50. I’m sure that

made things much more personal. It will be offered next year.. Already planning on attending. I’m also sure that Tom is more than willing to discuss his experiences at the seminar-... just ask him.

OLDCRAFT FOR ALL OLD CRAFTERS

Next meeting TUESDAY JUNE 21 will be a field trip. This is our reward for being “good” all year, or- so far anyway. Tom Cowan has arranged for a tour of Oldcrafters up at Sewanee. They have set up some new production equipment. Don’t miss this one——it promises to he an interesting adventure. Kind of sound like a travel agency, don’t I?  Now for the IMPORTANT part. We are expected there a 7:00 PM sharp, like a good tool. We will be leaving the Duck River building no later than 6:30. We’ll have a van or two and try to car pool. Spouses and families are particularly welcome on this outing, as always. We’ve included a map for stragglers and adventurers. SEE YOU TUESDAY

THE ANNUAL ANNUAL ANNUAL PICNIC.

Our third annual picnic will be held Tuesday July 19. We will start arriving at 6:00 PM. As always the burgers, dogs, and drinks will be provided by the club. We ask that everyone bring one other simple dish—dessert, salad, or your specialty. We inherited all the paper leftovers last year and volunteered to head things up this year. So ifyou get a call from one of us your co—operation will be greatly appreciated. Calling Tom Baskin——now how many hamburgers did you buy last year? The contest will be held at the same time this year and we are expecting a fun evening for everyone. Bring the family!!!
