OLD TIMEY DAYS - A SMASHING SUCCESS!

Thanks to beautiful weather, a great showing by our membership, and a healthy turnout of “lookers” the stage was set for a great event. Susan and Tom Church and Torn Cowan are thanked for their efforts in getting the show on the road”. The following note from Henry Davis, our president sums It all up:

“I’d like to thank those of you who helped make our Olde Timey Days show/sale a success. Special thanks go to our committee leaders Susan Church and Tom Cowan.

This was the first time our club has “gone public”. We gave out several Information sheets containing membership forms. I feel this exposure will result in more awareness of our club and bring in some new members.  I would appreciate any comment from you concerning the show/sale. Just make a note of those things you thought could be done better and even let me know about the things you liked. This input will be of great value if we decide to have another show or sale.”

Now for some highlights and lowlights of the show!!  Phil Bishops display of fine woods was Impressive, as it always is. For those who missed it, Phil had 25 or 30 boards of different types of wood. Most boards were 8 ft long and really showed off the character of each wood. He also brought along a few pieces of priceless furniture — the ladies who insisted on getting some made found they were truely priceless—— Phil let them know he wouldn’t make them for any price!

You wondered why I called the show a smashing success?  Gusts of wind made the displays a bit sporty as attendees dove to catch Terry’s lamp, Phils boards, Bills baskets and Jacks plate/clocks! The lamp escaped serious damage and was finally tied to the table to keep it safe. One of Jacks clocks wasn’t as lucky. Mike Holms stayed home till the worst of the wind subsided THEN he brought his craftwork.   Susan showed us that she had been to a windy event before. Her display of frames was mounted on racks made of hardware cloth so the wind just blew through. While it was an inconvenience, the wind cooled us as the area continued to suffer through the last throws of a record breaking heat wave!

Torn Cowan spent the day doing double duty.   He was also host to a group of Confederate history buffs from Pennslyvania. They added a lot to the parade and we enjoyed talking to them at our display.

Parking was at a premium. Jack even held one couples car hostage until they purchased a clock! He had the car keys and was considering mounting clockworks in the right hand door then selling the car as a large conversation piece.

Tom Church spent a good part of the day threading a large dowel rod. The story we heard was that Tom’s dowel will solve a workbench space problem— both he and Susan insist the other takes up too much room. Tom, be a good guy and buy Susan a workbench for Christmas Ca friend of mine tried it a few years ago but his wife traded it in for some clothes).

Wesley, Susan, Judy, and Jack provided entertainment on the Omni— Chord. A Sears salesman was rumored to have asked them to be the stars in a Thanksgiving promotion but they turned him down!

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

There will be art executive Committee meeting after the October 21st meeting. Elected officers and members at large are asked to stay for the meeting, other members are invited to join us.  We abide by sunshine law even if some of our elected government officials don’t!

SURVEY RESULTS

I’m continuing to compile results from the surveys included in last months SPLINTERS. Quite a few surveys were handed In at the last meeting but there are still some outstanding. Seems like there are a lot of Craftsman users out there but the foreign brands are making themselves known. I hope to publish results next month so don’t forget give your surveys to Henry Davis at the October meeting.

TOYS FOR TOTS

On the last pages of this issue of SPLINTERS I’ve included a couple of simple projects for those who want to get an early start on Christmas toys for needy children. At the October 21 meeting I will have some more plans for simple, easy to make toys. The idea is for you to find one or more projects that you like and then make some of them for the club to give to needy kids for Christmas. Tullahoma Fire Dept. and the National Guard in Winchester have had Toys For Tots programs in the past and we plan to distribute our toys to them in early December. You may find one of the projects that would be “just perfect” for a special niece, nephew, grandchild, child, etc.. After you practice on a few for our club project, make up some for your own Christmas kiddies! P.S. Joe Pawlick and Terry Penn are heading up this club project.

WHO AM I!

I attended a woodworking club meeting a few months ago and everyone was friendly and asked me to join. I did. I attended a couple of meetings and saw that guests were treated warmly but “signed up” members were left to their own devices. I missed a meeting and when I returned, no one seemed to notice my absence. A minor series of medical problems caused me to miss a couple of more meetings but no one seemed to care. I don’t think I want to join the woodworking club this year.

Could the person who wrote that narrative be referring to our club?  I think some of us have felt a bit that way in many clubs we’ve joined.  To

someone just joining a club there’s a letdown after the first flurry of “getting to know you” activity is over. That’s when the challenge begins for each of us.

Each of our members are keys to the success of the club. Our hospitality, friendliness, and interest in the club should be evident not just when a new member joins us, but at every meeting. Start at  the next meeting by making it a point to talk to someone you didn’t talk to at the last meeting, or bring in an unannounced-”show and tell” so that. others can get to know you (Henry or Phil can always make time available). In short, make the effort to make the club the kind of friendly organization you’ve always wanted to belong to.

NOMINAT IONS

The nominating committee is getting in gear for next elections. All current posit ions will be filled by membership vote at our December meeting so now’s the time to step up and let the committee know what position you are Interested in. Information on the nominating process Ct be covered by Henry Davis at the October meeting.
