SEPTEMBER MEETING. TIMEY TO GET READY!!

Our long awaited entry into the limelight is approaching! On October 4th the Tennessee Valley Woodworkers will undertake our first civic function—a display in the Winchester Olde Timey Days celebration. A great advantage of the celebration is that we can sell as well as display our woodcraft items. Its more like a traft show with no admission fee!

The committee has gathered quite a bit of information on the celebration, our display area and some of the rules of the road. For those who have missed some of the recent meetings, the plans are to have the display set up by 6:45am on the 4th. We will be set up on the square, in a prime spot, and will have the display running until 4:00pm.

At our next meeting we will get to the meat of the subject and talk about display areas, tables, and assuring that all who wish to display (and sell!!) are given the space and time to do so. It’s very important that those who wish to have their craft items displayed and sold be at the meeting.

Also featured at the meeting will be Tom Cowan who will display some of the work he did in setting up a civil war era panorama which measured about 100ft by 200ft.. The work was included in an educational film of the civil war in the west Tennessee area. Toms work included all structures, cannon, and landscape of this miniature movie set. I think we’ll all find many interesting facets to this “adventure”.

-Don’t forget: Tuesday, September 16th, 7:00 pm at the DREMEC meeting room is the next Tennessee Valley Woodworkers meeting.

AUGUST MEETING

Our August meeting featured Bill Knight and Henry Davis. Bill gave a great narrative of the Woodturning seminar he attended in Gattlinburg. It seems that the two or three day seminars give you enough time to really get into the subject and offer much more than we can get from an occasional discussion. Bill has more information on the seminars yet to be’ offered and he’ll be glad to share it with you.

Henry “showed and told” the table he’s been working on. The legs appeared intricate but Henry says that when you follow the instructions, it goes together pretty well.

ON YOUR MARK GET SET GO!

In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s starting to get to be fall. After the first cool wave the local stores brace themselves for the onslaught of woodworkers who are ready to get back into the woodshop. A lot of u5 take a vacation from our woodworking hobby over the months when the shops temperature approaches that of the sun! Now we’re ready to clean off the workbench and wade into that clock, shelving unit, table, chair, or other favorite project. Maybe it’s time to take a quick safety check of some of that well used equipment before we torture it for another season!

Are drills all sharpened?

Sawblades sharpened and cleaned?

Dust cleaned off of the motors?

Worn mechanical parts replaced?

Electrical cords in good repair?

Guards in place on all power tools

electrical cord problems should get immediate attention--for our sake. Do all your cords have the three prong plugs (bad shocks may be in store>? Have you replaced the cord on the sander which you ran over last year?

Is the work area free from tripping hazards and excess sawdust?

This is just a partial list, give yourself a good inspection before you enter the craft “starting blocks” for the winter rush.

ELECTIONS

Our by—laws call for the President to appoint a nominating committee who will provide a slate of candidates before December 1st. While the nominating committee has not yet been formed, its time for each of us to see if we would like to handle a club position for a year. It’s fun to be part of a club, even more fun to be part of what makes it tick. If you feel you want to contribute some of your time and talents, let Henry Davis know of your desires. All positions are up for grabs and a new supply of ideas and talent in the club leadership positions will assure a vibrant club.

CHRISTMAS SURVEY

The final page of the newsletter is a survey—results are for club use only. Through the survey I hope to get a better idea of your preferences in woodworking tools and then present the results back to you in the November newsletter. That will give plenty of time to get your Christmas list ready for Santa.

Please fill the survey out and bring it to the Sep or Oct meetings or mail it to Joe at Rt3, Box 433, Estill Sprinqs,Tn., 37330. Hope to get lots of returns !

SEE YOU AT THE SEPT 16 MEETING!!!
