TENNESSEE VALLEY W000WORKERS

A new woodworking club’ A club aimed at all levels of woodworker and one where all can come to learn, swap ideas, and enjoy the fellowship of friends with common interests. And you’re part of it! ! Like any organization it takes help from each of us to make it work well. Our newly elected officers and two ad hoc committees will do their best, the rest is up to us.

Congratulations to our first club officers. Unanimously elected at the December meeting were:

Henry Davis President

Phil Bishop  Vice President

Tom Cowan Treasurer

Susan Church        Publicity

Joe Pawlick  Secretary

Also elected as Executive Committee Members at Large were Terry Penn and Randy Lee.

We wish all of them well as they guide the club through its first year.

A MESSAGE TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS

The Tennessee Valley Woodworkers are off and running. An area-wide woodworkers club is now a reality. A club if this nature has long been the dream of many of us. I have a good feeling about the future of our club and it’s a real pleasure for me to be associated with such an enthusiastic group who share common interests.

The two long range projects which we have selected should b~ good for both our club and our membership. The toys for tots project for next Christmas will give us recognition as a club interested in the community. The show/sale, set for next fall at the Old Timey Days, will not only give the club recognition, but will be of benefit to the individual craftsmen among us as we display and sell our products.

I am looking forward to our January meeting. Everyone is interested on what our fellow members are doing. Bring your projects, large or small so we can all enjoy them with you. You will never find a group who will be more appreciative of the time, effort and problems involved in your projects. Bring pictures if you no longer have the items, or if they are just too large to bring.

As I stated at our last meeting, the future of the club is in your hands. The officers are elected to serve the membership, they need your input, enthusiasm, and support. We are all new at this,so let us know how you feel, good or bad.

See you January 21 at 7:00pm. Remember, bring your projects and a friend.

Henry Davis

President

Tennessee Valley Woodworkers

SPLINTERS

Our periodic newsletter “SPLINTERS” will be prepared by the Secretary and used to spread ideas around and give prospective members information on the programs the club is involved in. We’d even carry for sale or wanted adds — for a price ($250 for a two liner)! Ideas for SPLINTERS will be greatly appreciated so, if you’ve just overcome some impossible problem, purchased the tool of a lifetime and want to brag about it, or just found a way to keep sawdust out of your pockets, share the news with us.

COMMITTEES FORMED

Two committees were formed at the December meeting:

Old Timey Day— headed up by Tom Cowan and including Susan Church and Phil Bishop. They will get the club a prime spot at the Winchester Old Timey Day event and lest us display our woodworking talents.

Toys For Tots— led by Joe Pawlick, the committee consists of Terry Penn and Bi1l Eubank. They wi11 gather plans and show us how to turn our scrap heaps into toys for Christmas ‘86.

Both committees will need your support so don’t be bashful. You’ll hear lots more about them at future meetings.

GREAT PROGRAMS

Ever wondered why the cherry tabletop of your prized drop leaf split? Probably the same reason my turned vase no longer holds water — improperly dried or constructed without allowance for shrinkage. Phil Bishop and Tom Cowan teamed up to give us the rundown on wood drying and the effects of shrinkage on wood projects (potential disaster!). Thanks to both of you. There will be fewer pieces of kindling for my fireplace now that I can foil mother nature as she attempts to rip my treasures apart.

NEXT MEETING JANUARY 21 —SHOW&TELL

Phil Bishop our Vice President and program chairman, has set our January 21 meeting as a “show and tell” meeting. Bring along a friend and an example of your handywork. Phil says if it’s too big to fit through the door we’ll come out to your truck to see it’ Crafts, furniture, or fun projects are all in order. It will be a great meeting and one where prospective members can see how varied our woodworking interests are. Its up to each of us to get the word to woodworkers in the area — the club has eleven members and is growing. Lets give more people a chance to enjoy it.   BRING A FRIEND TO THE JANUARY 21 MEETING’’ The show & tell will prove to our non-member friends that they have nothing to fear!
